Awesome
amazing
Great family fun event!
Very well organised
Can you fix the weather!
Wonderful and varied scenery & terrain. Fantastic route marking, marshals, loos, bag drop & drinking water supply. Out of this world branding, including t-shirt & medal. Too hot.
Would prefer The Martian Race a few weeks earlier in the year, for a better chance of a reasonable temperature. Understanding that March is too early, to avoid the risk of mud on the common.
Also, several of us were nearly tripped by a small dog running around our legs over the wetlands. Happens to me regularly on Horsell wetlands & common. To reduce the risk of accidents, dog walkers should be required to use a short lead for unruly beasts that chase around runners.
Thank you for your comments. On the date of the event, we are really grateful to McLaren for the use of their facilities and the parking. The monies raised from the parking effectively pays for the loos. The only condition is that it cannot be on the same day as when there is a F1 race anywhere as their teams are all in working. That limits the dates we have and as you say it is a toss up between possibly horrible and more slippery muddy tracks or sunny. On the dogs thing, we share the common with everyone and we have no right to demand others change their behaviour. We try to inform people in advance but that is as far as we can go. For example the riding stables nearby go in a different direction that day. But think you for your kind comments.
All round great local event !
A few observations / suggestions:
1. Drinks should be available for runners at the finish
2. Coffee truck should serve food as the one last year did. Yes there were queues then but no one complained.
3. Shame the vilage area could not be bigger. A beer ''tent'' would be a great addition.
4. The increase in the numbers of toilets this year was, imo, very unnoticeable, with large queues evident.
5. Supply water misters on course for the runners to run through?
6. I was asked by one of the organisers if the numbers could be increased from 900. I immediately thought yes why not, but there would need to be more parking room and I'm not sure if McLaren could offer that.
7. Expand the range of merchandise? The stall on Sunday looked a bit sparse. Please do not have the logo in plastic as its extremely sticky. Better if they are printed. Also, imo, the large logo should be on the reverse, with a small one on the left chest area.
We do look at all feedback and consider it. There is a water station at the finish. It went through a lot of water. We have vendors but it is difficult to get through right number and the right type. All these things take a great deal of setting up and as for a water mist spray I am afraid that is a bit beyond us in the middle of the common. Thanks for the review.
Very well run event, will be back next year!
Very well run and all volunteers were super friendly and supportive along the route. Definitely running again next year.
Loved it!
My first time running the Martian race. Great event, loved every minute of it (well nearly!)
Chris Bard
Lovely run round Horsell Common
The only minor issue was the PA was not loud enough - couldn't hear anything!
Thank you for that. Last year I got the impression that it was louder and as it was the same kit I can only put that down to operator error! Will shoot the current operator and get a new one. Glad you enjoyed the event we do put a lot into it.
Nice Trail Half Marathon
Good organisation and communication throughout. It was a well run event
A beautiful run in the woods of Horsell
Great run, really well organised. Due to heat would an 08.30 start be better?
We try to bring the start time back if we can but it does have a knock on effect on other things like getting supporters and staff in place. I dont expect any tears but I am on the course (with others) at about 4:30 having done most of the route marking the day before so we have to strike a balance. Thank you so much for taking the time to provide your feedback.
A lovely friendly Trail Run
Hot Martian
Great well organised event, thanks to the friendly volunteers, nice medal, will be back next year!
A hot day for running 21k!
Well marked course with supportive marshals.
A big thank you to the ladies at the on course water station for getting extra bottles of water so those of us slower runners didn't run out.
Great local race , well organised, great communication ahead of the race. I love Horsell Common, so it was brilliant to enter a race here. Will do it next year. Wish it started earlier though, as the sun was brutal !
I think to would be better for these races to start earlier . The weather seems to be getting hotter and hotter each year and trying to run in these conditions, is tough. My race only had a short amount of open areas but I saw so many people race off and stop and start walking as they couldn’t keep it up. When walking him through the Common towards the Wetlands , I saw the 21km runners through the open fields really struggling, most of them walking . If the races started earlier, it might help . Great to have massage facilities at the end . Thank you.
Thank you for your review. There are a lot of moving parts in this event and 99% are volunteers (including me). I and others have been on the course since 04:30 checking things. We set the course the day before but have to put extra signs out and check arrows have not been moved. If we try to start earlier we need people in earlier and we have to strike a balance otherwise we will not have the marshals we need. It is something we constantly review.
Superb event in an iconic location
Great event
Really nice atmosphere across an interesting course
Could think about asking runners to line up roughly in order of expected times especially for the big field events. I ran the 10k and took 18 seconds just to cross the line and spent the first kilometer dodging past some fairly slow people who had started at the front of the line-up
Beautiful trail run - not much elevation
It was hard not having distance marked out, and small number running the half made me feel that I was on my own for the majority of it but I guess that meant it wasn't too busy!
Great parking and plenty of loos
Distance markers became a bit problematic as all three routes split at one point so all will be different.
